Sucker removal

Carried out during the month of May, this action consists of eliminating the shoots (suckers) that originate from the trunk. This is done to avoid draining sap away from the buds on the fruiting cane and the spur. The best moment to remove the suckers is when they have reached around 15-20cm in length. It should be done so as to leave shoots that might come in handy to straighten a crooked vine, or shoots that might serve as spurs in the Guyot pruning system or to renew old cordons in the spurred-cordon system. It is particularly important to take off excessive shoots in the “curve” zone, where suckers will tangle with the shoots coming from the spur. It is also recommended to evaluate the plant’s fertility in order to regulate this operation according to desired levels. In the case of newly-grafted or young vines, the goal is to leave those that are the straightest and the best developed.
